You Scratch Me….I’ll Scratch You

The “you uncover me and I’ll uncover you” and “you protect me and I’ll protect you” ethic being threatened by John Conyers that is referenced in this article is a classic example of the self- interest based ethic of our culture at its very worst. The women I have dealt with coming from the streets of Panama City and elsewhere have the very same self-interest based ethical system. It is endemic in our culture. It leads to a people-using mentality….and to entitlement by virtue of power or pursuit of associating with people with perceived power. Our government in Washington is clearly up to its ears in it. There are no rules that they feel apply to them. There are no values that the rules support and to which the rules point. I am actually teaching on Ethics and Moral Development this Sunday as part of a Christians Growing Christians: Practical Discipleship class at Lynn Haven UMC on Sunday. I couldn’t have asked for a clearer example of the worst of the human condition and how it is ruining our nation and our world.
I could not have said this better….Wait, maybe I could:
2 Corinthians 4:2- Because we have this ministry (of reconciliation in Christ Jesus) we do not engage in secrecy, shameful conduct, deception, or distortion of the Word.”
These 4 activities were called “fingerprints of satan” (sic) by Beth Moore in her study “Breaking Free.” The whole concept behind the 4th and 5th step of a Twelve Step program is to exercise the wisdom in James 5:16…… “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. “…… It will free one from the bondage of one’s secret temptations and sins, guilt, shame, etc. and the condemnation under which satan tries to keep a person.
I don’t really expect a revival of spiritual, moral, and ethical righteousness in Washington. But transparency would help…..except that the more bold and transparent people become with their sins, the more we laugh and dismiss its impact on any of us and we continue to go down the drain with the worst of the worst. Nothing surprises or even causes shame anymore, it seems.
