I spent my morning working on this next Sunday’s sermon, second in a series of four weeks’ of “pulpit supply” at a local church. The scriptures from the lectionary and the basic points I feel led to make are laid in. Now I can put it down for a while and let it percolate in my spirit. I’ll come back to it Thursday and review it and work the final draft. Then I’ll read through it aloud a half dozen times. I’ll check it one last time for grammar, spelling and “flow” of the manuscript after the multiple vocal readings and then print it on Saturday afternoon.
I’ve never had a formal seminary class on preaching because my call is to teaching, counseling, and discipleship so my graduate theological studies were in other areas. But this is the pattern I’ve developed over the years when I’ve had the opportunity to preach. I manage to get through it with God’s grace. Preaching is not my favorite cuppa tea, but I always say “yes”, if possible, because God always shows me wonderful new things in his Word as I apply myself to this process.
