In 2001, after I was asked to be lay director for Blue Lake Emmaus Walk 137 in August 2002, I began praying for a theme and scripture. Almost immediately the word the LORD God pressed on me was “trust.” I searched scriptures about trust and nothing was clicking. Weeks went by. I met with my spiritual director, Ron Ball. We prayed, searched, and waited. Babble Mason’s song, “Trust His Heart.” came across my path. It resonated. The line, “when you can’t trace His hand, trust His heart” gave me a visual for “heart and hand.” So I explored scripture with those words. Nothing clicked…. until I read Psalm 37:3-5. “Trust”, “ delight in Him”, “desires of your heart,” “He will act.” I immersed myself in the verse. I’ve preached on it but I don’t remember having heard anyone else ever preach on it….. until this by Louie Giglio! Most go to Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” That verse is close, but lacks the resonance of Psalms 3. What do we do in a season of waiting? By Louie Giglio
“Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will act.” // Psalm 37:3-5
When we are awaiting the outcome of a comeback, four phrases offer great perspective.
- Trust in the Lord, and do good.
The place to start is deciding to actively trust in God even when you are not sure of the outcome. Trusting is never passive. We don’t just sit back and chill. The invitation from God is to keep doing our very best at whatever God has put in front of us while relying on a great sovereign God to orchestrate the plans and direction of our lives.
- Dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
While we are waiting and trusting in the Lord, our task is to dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. We can trust that God is working, in both seen and unseen ways, in the midst of whatever problem we’re going through. In the meantime, cultivate faithfulness for whatever’s in your hands at the moment. Do your work well, for God’s glory, even when no one is watching.
- Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.
This is a promise God makes, yet we have to notice its sequence. The delighting comes first. The fulfillment of our desires happens second. Whenever that sequence is lived out, we don’t need to worry about what our desires may be. Because we delight in God, our desires will follow suit.
- Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act.
Jesus asks us to commit our ways to Him. And it comes with a promise: He. Will. Act. Step by step, God will make our comeback happen. He will bring about what HE wants in our lives, unfolding His plan in His time and His way.”
I have blogged about this verse several times and how God has used it in my life. Here is one of those blog posts:
“This scripture has become my “life scripture”, of sorts. I find myself referring to it often. God has used it to teach me many lessons.
“Trust in the Lord and do good and you will live securely in the land;
Delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart;
Commit your way to Him, trust in Him and on your behalf He will act.” Psalm 37:3-5
As I meditate on this scripture I see three invitations from the Lord:
– to trust in Him and do good
– to delight in Him
– to commit my way to Him
and, with each invitation comes a promise:
– that I will live securely in the “land” (I will dwell in the kingdom and know assurance of my faith)
– that I will have the desires of my heart given to me by Him
– that He will act on my behalf
As I accept the invitations that He extends, He is faithful to deliver on His promises! That is how I have experienced this scripture over the last 8 years, since I became acquainted with it.
I continue to meditate on it and find in it a lot revealed about the Lord. Accept His invitations, know the joy of His promises fulfilled in your life!” CBB 1/23/10
