Deep or wide…… I have transported glass enough over the years to know first hand that it should be borne in a vertical position, resting upright on its thin edge and braced against shifting rather than spread out lying down flat. As safe as that horizontal position may appear, the forces it is subjected to while in motion are more that can be trusted for safe transport.
Glass transported lying down flat has its large surface area subjected to a lot of force that it cannot bear. When the broad, thin, flat surface is spread out horizontally, its thin surface gives way under uneven bumps and dips more than when it is standing up vertically.
When our mass is aligned vertically and braced we,too, can absorb the force of bumps and dips better. We can be more easily moved safely to avoid cracks and chips with better control in an upright position rather than flat.
Spiritually, too, I’d prefer to be positioned in a vertical alignment…. deep and narrow rather than broad and flat ……
By placing all my weight deeply on what is crystal clear and provides immediate support directly under me instead of being stretched thinly in a horizontal plane trying to span the entire scope of what’s visible from here to the horizon I will endure the bumps and dips better and will be safer and more secure along the journey from here to the next destination where I may then rest upon an immovable horizontal plane, fully supported at every point.
Now of course, the thicker the glass, the more tempered its composition, the more substance and weight it possesses, the less fragile and at risk it will be regardless of position while in motion.
