Memory of Family Pets

2/4/2017….. Pet Memories

“We have been medicating our little one-eyed kitty’s “good” eye for about 3 weeks and have almost 2 more weeks of treatment. She then goes back to the veterinary ophthalmology office in Tallahassee. It seems to be much better. She appears to be seeing well enough to manage. We have felt like a veterinary hospital ourselves lately. In addition to the one-eyed kitty’s treatment, we have a 14 yo cat that is getting subcutaneous fluids 3 X a week and an injection prescribed by Dr. Bo Bergloff that Bill and I are doing. Our diabetic dog, Winston, gets glucose monitoring several times a day and special home made food that we have to prepare in bulk about every 12-14 days. Our Daisy beagle is high energy and requires a LOT of attention. Our elderly Pug, Tiger, has hip issues and has to be pampered. LOL! It all keeps Bill especially busy managing their schedules. Saturday morning is quiet time….everyone gets to hang out and just chill. No hurrying everyone through the morning routine so we can get out the door. Awwww…..everyone is happy.”

We have had a problem with Winston having distress at night.  He seems uncomfortable and is sleepless.  He does not whimper, but he moves around over and over, won’t sit or lay down.  He would jerk periodically.  He wants to lay with his chest on Bill.  His nose gets warm.  He tucks his tail and seems to be looking off into nowhere.  He pants during these episodes but will not drink water.   They go on for 4-6 hours until he and we are exhausted. He acts like he may be trying to gag at times with it, too. I’m wondering if he is having an arrhythmia or GERD?

It’s very distressing to Bill and causes us both a lot of loss of sleep.  Winston  will not go in a crate.  Because of his illness six or so months ago Winston has slept in our bed since then.   These episodes are happening about once a week.  They started about 3 months ago and have gradually been getting more regular.

Sometimes he gets under the bed and hides during these episodes.  They happen generally at night.  Bill remembers only 1 daytime episode.

(we later had him evaluated by Dr. Bo Bergloff who determined Winnie had some kind of degenerative neuro issues…. he was having small seizure episodes. We put him on gabapentin…it was  probably due to his diabetes. In the 2 weeks prior to me having to put him down on 12/27/21, he had gotten very different.  He would walk around the fence line in the back yard if the townhouse, eat grass and would get into corners and not seem to know how to get out, didn’t seem to register commands from me.  On that Monday morning he had several seizures and lost leg control, going limp.)

With diabetic 12 year-old pug mix Winston’s death on December 27,2021, the only pet left with me since Bill’s death 17 months ago is Minnie, the one eyed cat, now 12 years old.  We just muddle along together keeping each other company.

Our adopted one-eyed cats are fascinated by the pile of rubble in the place that used to be their hang out. Mickey (“I am the king of the hill”) and Minnie (“I found me a perch”) are thoroughly exploring the changes. The other three cats are keeping a cautious distance, darting in the door at night after Mickey and Minnie are crated. Poor Tiger dog is confused by all the coming and going, since anyone coming here surely must be here to see him!
