Catherine de Hueck Doherty: With the gift of listening comes the gift of healing, because listening to your brothers or sisters until they have said the last words in their hearts is healing and consoling. Someone has said that it is possible “to listen a person’s soul into existence.” I like that. (from Christian Spirituality of the East for Western Man)
Tonight I was looking for a particular book and came across an old obsolete address book that I used for decades probably beginning circa 1978. I thought I had long ago thrown it out with the advent of computer databases and social media friend lists. I had scribbled and erased, marked through, written over, taped small snippets on pages, etc….all in an effort to keep up with people who have been part of our lives through the years. It was used greatly during the years that I wrote annual Christmas letters and sent 100 or more Christmas cards each year……early in our marriage and for the better part of 20+ years. Many of the names are of people now deceased. Others I’ve lost track of over the years. On the cover I had taped a little piece of paper with the quote above. It is yellowed and worn, but it spoke to something that struck a chord in my spirit at some point and seemed somehow attached to the names in that little book. At the point I put it there, no doubt, I was looking for someone who would listen to the last words of my heart……for healing and consoling my soul. I eventually found it in intimate relationship with Christ and some godly friends, including a wonderful Christian counselor and friend, and especially in a redeemed marriage 25 years ago.
In my role now as a Christian counselor and in discipling women in crisis I do a lot of listening and sometimes I do see souls coming into existence spiritually. I will always be grateful for those who helped listen my soul into existence and those dear people who still listen sometimes until the last words of my heart have poured out.
