As I’ve thought more about Queen Vashti’s refusal to come before King Ahasuerus, I’ve wondered if maybe she was just having a ‘bad hair day’. Yesterday was one of those for me. I had needed to wash and set my hair night before last but didn’t feel well and was just too tired to do so. (I am one of those relics that still actually prefers hair rollers to blow drying and curling ironing.) So yesterday I felt such self loathing due to the state of my hair, I impetuously called the salon and asked for a lunchtime appointment, which was available. I felt very self indulgent for doing that. Then I considered that since my housekeeper, who has come weekly for the last 5+ years, has quit, maybe I should just take the money I was paying her and use it to get a weekly salon pick me up! Now that we’re in a smaller home, there does seem to be less housework to do. Is that a tradeoff I really want? Get my hair done weekly in exchange for doing my own vacuuming, dusting, and bathroom cleaning? I think I’m going to try it for a while. I’ll have fewer bad hair days, but I might have to learn to tolerate a more disorderly household. There’s always a price to pay!
