The issue of calling one to “decree and declare” assumes authority God has not given us. God, our Almighty LORD and Master over All Things has already decreed all things according to His plan, purpose, and will. He has written it in His Word, manifests it through His Incarnate Son, Christ Jesus, and executes it through His own Holy Spirit.
I can know what He has decreed. I believe it. I trust it. And I can declare my confidence in His power to accomplish it. And I will obey that which is decreed about me. But that is the extent of my power and authority.
In all kingdoms throughout history the decree comes from the king. His servants declare their confidence and trust in that which the king has decreed. And they obey it.
A conversation about this arose with a discipleship student recently when she was told to “decree and declare” God’s blessings over her life.
My friend Dottie Wilson sent this devotional today that speaks also to this issue..….
“You have a “Decree” that is older than any struggle you are walking through right now. What you are walking through is a temporary chapter, but “GOD’S DECREE, HIS VERDICT” over you is an eternal story. This “Decree/Verdict”was sealed, fixed, and protected by God and predates every sickness, challenge, hardship or adversity.
Gods Sovereign plan, purpose, and promises over you were established before the foundation of the world, making them superior to any present hardship. Let me repeat that again, making them superior to any present hardship!
God‘s Decree to adopt you, bless you and work all things for your good was made in eternity past, long before your current crisis and cannot be overturned. Your victory was decided in the mind of God long before you ever took your first step into what faces you now. Your future is not hanging in the balance. It is held securely by the One who declared the outcome long ago.”
God has already decreed that which will be. I am to “ask, seek, and knock,” according to what I learn about God and His Kingdom as I grow in Christ. I can be sure that if I know and follow His Word, my footsteps will be guided by His will.
Matthew 6:33”
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”
2 Timothy 1:1
“For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.”
