“John Wesley once famously said, “There is no holiness apart from social holiness.” Over the years, many have mistakenly asserted that he was talking about social justice.
In reality, he was talking about doing discipleship in the context of real relationships. In essence, you can’t become a real Christian alone. The way forward is as close as a few other people who are willing to band together.” JD Walt, Seedbed.
I have been blessed to have had several women in my life who are my “band”….. sometimes in formal weekly meetings, other times as our lives’ demands permitted. The disruptions of the last few years have interfered with our regular times together. But they continue to be a significant part of my spiritual life and growth. I met with one yesterday after weeks of travel for her and the rigors of moving for me. It was a refreshing, refilling time. Another one I talk to several times a week. Another who lives out of town is always available to me for conversations about Scripture, life issues, prayer concerns, benchmarking our respective observations on the work of God in the world and how we join in it…… if you don’t have a discipleship group, you might want to consider whether your faith is as vibrant and flourishing as is available in Christ.
