Death and Taxes

From 3/12/22….

Getting a letter from this source is always a bit angst-provoking. To receive two in the same day is doubly angst- provoking. In 2019 , with all the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, we simply weren’t able to get things together by April 15th, 2020…. so our CPA requested an extension in April of 2020 until November 2020….and we all know what happened in March 2020- every “non-essential” function everywhere shut down…. The request for the extension on the 2019 tax return had not appeared in the system of IRS by June 2021. We had already filed 2019 return in November of 2020 and had filed the 2020 return in April of 2021 when we got a chokingly large bill in June 2021 for a late filing penalty on 2019’s return. Panicked, I called the CPA. He said, “Don’t pay it. I’ll send a copy of the request for delayed filing of the 2019 return. Let’s see what they do.” Nine months later I have received a letter that they located the April 2020 request for the 2019 return delayed filing until Nov 2020 and it was approved. (We are in Mar 2022 and have already filed the 2021 return!) The second letter advised me that the late filing penalty for 2019’s return was being dropped. $0 balance due. Wow… the wheels of IRS action have always been slow, but this is a new experience… But it is also a reminder that they do eventually get around to whatever it is they are going to do to you!!! You can count on it. 🤣 A CPA is worth every dollar paid.
