My view of ministry and benevolence is as a partnership, first with God as a steward of Kingdom resources placed in my care, then as a partner with others like myself, journeying through life who have recognized it is better accomplished in community.
This week Titus 2 put this principle to work on behalf of a young woman in transition from homelessness to restored economic stability. We watched her work for 5 weeks after coming to shelter from another state with several school age children. I inquired of her case managers and chaplain about her circumstances and plan. I discovered she had a vehicle that had an expired out of state registration, no auto insurance and a suspended license. She was not allowed to drive the vehicle in Florida in that condition by the agency from which she had sought temporary help. She faced a hurdle in moving forward…. a fine out of state that would take 5-6 months to overcome as it had to be paid in full due to its delinquency. Several of us who had worked with her, observing her interaction with her well-behaved children, appreciating the initiative and diligence with which she followed direction and carried out daily tasks, and the candor and transparency with which she shared information about her circumstances, we decided after prayer and consultation that this was a case where helping remove an obstacle was warranted. She researched costs and outlined a financially workable plan for moving forward that included her financially sacrificing to make the plan work. Titus 2 and a local church’s benevolence ministry shared in the immediate goal, as she also used some of her funds saved during that 5 weeks, to retire the delinquent fine. A clearance letter from her previous home state allows her to now secure a drivers license with her own funds. In a few weeks she will have the money to register the vehicle and secure insurance coverage. She can begin a bona fide job search, be safe and legal while transporting her children, and continue her progress toward a restored life of family stability. She told me that she had felt the Lord led her to our area and she is 180 degrees changed in her heart about a lot of things. She is grateful for healthy and supportive faith-founded programs that help people overcome obstacles and that challenge individuals to trust God and work interdependently with His people to change lives.
