There are many who believe and trust that God intended each person who sits in highest political authority in our nation to be president simply by virtue of the fact that he is! It could not have happened otherwise. That is indeed indicative of God’s sovereignty over humankind. The question becomes, “why godless and evil leaders are allowed or chosen by God?
Throughout the Bible there are references to good leaders and to not-so-good leaders…all of whom God placed in authority FOR A REASON. Sometimes as a good example, sometimes as a horrible warning. God’s purpose for placing any individual in his position of authority will be evident in time. It is generally to direct people back toward obedience to God by allowing consequences that become untenable. In the meantime, Christians know that all rulers have their faults. But God can use the circumstances anyway, even bring good out of things that look dire. God will use each of us sinful and broken people to bring about his redemptive will.
Human Authority, A Principle Instituted By God and Observed in the Bible:
Romans 13:1-2
Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.
Daniel 2:21
“It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men And knowledge to men of understanding.
Daniel 2:37-38
“You, O king, are the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, the strength and the glory; and wherever the sons of men dwell, or the beasts of the field, or the birds of the sky, He has given them into your hand and has caused you to rule over them all. You are the head of gold.
Daniel 4:17
“This sentence is by the decree of the angelic watchers And the decision is a command of the holy ones, In order that the living may know That the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind, And bestows it on whom He wishes And sets over it the lowliest of men.”
John 19:11
Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”
1 Peter 2:13
Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority,
Romans 13:6
For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.
1 Timothy 2:2
for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.
1 Peter 2:14
or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.
