Silent Retreat

Listen.
     To the throbbing soles
     To the peeling cuticles
     To the coarse heels
     To the jagged nails.
Listen.
     To the flaking shins
     To the aching knees
     To the swollen knuckles
     To the painful shoulder.
Listen.
     To the furrowed brow
     To the chapped lips
     To the raw cheek
     To the straying eyebrow..
Listen.
     To the tight scalp
     To the tense neck
     To the itching back
     To the inflexible hips.
Listen.
     To the strained elbow
     To the sprained ankle
     To the hungry taste buds
Denied the savor of a leisurely meal.
Listen.
     To the shallow breath
     To the dry hair
     To the ringing ears
     To the pounding pulse.
Listen.
     To the bruised skin
     To the dehydrated veins
     To the burning eyes
     Denied the rest they need.
Listen.
To the hollow echo in your soul
Left empty of the treasures carried off
     And the tidbits given away
And the crumbs dropped for the lost.
Listen.
    Your spirit is crying out
    In a thousand ways
For the care that it needs
And can only get if you rest.
Be quiet.
