Confronting or Projecting Our Own Demons?

From Rich Villodas on Twitter: "Until the Church consistently leads people to the wilderness (i.e. prayer, solitude, silence, reflection, repentance, etc.) to confront our own demons, we will project our demons back out into the world, and fail to see that some demons in the world are reflections of ourselves." We can't begin to address the demons that come at us from outside until we have dealt with the Holy Spirit as we've invited and cooperated with Him within us and submitted to the refining work to be done in our own human spirit. David F. Watson: Divine Agency, Bigfoot, and Multiverses

Dr. David F. Watson…..writing about divine agency, the idea that God does things. 10/23/25 on Substack…a keeper “Jonah Goldberg is a media personality who uses his critical thinking skills far more often and effectively than many of his peers. I’ve always appreciated his analysis, even when I haven’t agreed with him. Call me crazy, but I like reasonable people. In the highly competitive world of the attention economy, reason, nuance, and fair play are more often than not trampled by jingoistic rage-baiting. This doesn’t help anyone except the conflict entrepreneurs, but it does keep the...

Prayer In Relation To Time

“15 examples of how prayer is life's greatest time-saver and our most productive course of action: When emergencies arise, we can receive clear, timely direction from the Lord through prayer, which eliminates confusion. As we converse with the Father, He can keep us from making wrong decisions that would have negative  long-range repercussions or would cause costly delays. Through intimate communion with the Savior, worry, anxiety and fretting can be eliminated because we grow in assurance of His character. Even if we should start down the wrong path out of ignorance, God can get us back on...

Cropping Out Of Photos

As I prepared for the Celebration of Life service for an elderly friend this past weekend, I came across a small photo of her in a lovely pink dress with a small white hat with netting, a white corsage and holding a bouquet. It appeared to be a wedding photo. But it was clear that the groom who had stood by her side had been trimmed out of the photo…..I wondered which of the three husbands whose deaths left her widowed it might have been. My guess from her youthful look was it was probably the first husband whom she had spoken of as abusive, unfaithful, having used her in numerous ways and...

What Is A Certified Recovery Support specialist (CRSS)?

A good explanation of the work of a CRSS, "certified recovery support specialist……Rev. Cathy Byrd, MS CRSS "Recovery is a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential. This process values hope, empowerment, self-direction and healing. A recovery-focus signals a shift in expectations for those seeking help and for those assisting them. Florida, itself, is undergoing a process of change with regard to addressing mental health and substance use conditions. Communities, providers, families and...

Awakening To Seasons of The Christian Calendar

For many years I followed the calendar, seasons, and holidays that coincided with a standard school system calendar…… That has been the case for many of us who raised children or worked in education….We continued in the school-year pattern we had known growing up and through our children's school years. But since attending seminary and growing in my appreciation of the Christian church calendar I have more and more turned toward a time-and-season view that corresponds to the liturgical year. A few years ago when I saw this Awakening Calendar from Seedbed, it resonated with me and became a...

The Quiet Part Out Loud- National Divide

1/10/26 Senator Chris McDaniel. Saying out loud what many think I keep hearing folks say this is just another rough patch for our country. Another season of hard feelings. History will smooth it out, they say. Time always does. I’m not so sure this time. What I see now feels different. And you see it, too. It’s not louder. But Deeper, in a way that ought to worry us more than shouting ever could. We’re not just divided over policies anymore. We’re divided over who we are. What we owe each other. Whether the other side even belongs to the same country. For most of my life, we argued inside a...

”Grief Is A Wild Creature…”

A prayer that is so on-point. Copied from the page of Cathy Boyd Byrd, written by Sarah Westfall. 5/30/22 "Grief is a wild creature, and right now, all our emotions and questions and frustrations are seeping out of the cracks of our brokenness. Some of it is spilling over onto each other. While I do not want to diminish the loss, put a lid on conversation, or inhibit necessary change, my hope in this moment is that we will not lose sight of our shared humanity. …..today, I want to make space to pause and offer this simple prayer: God, may these groans become our common ground.May we sit down...

A Son’s Love, A Disciple’s Faith

Dottie Wilson’s description here is like the faith of my husband, Bill. He was an only child of parents who loved and provided for him. He was also the only grandchild of his maternal grandparents and had an aunt and uncle close by who had no children and who spent time with him, too. He knew he was valued and loved, though he was not spoiled or demanding of “stuff.” He related well to older adults, especially. Although he didnt grow attending Sunday School or church camps or Christian youth activities, he had a simple trusting faith that I admired. He did attend a Methodist Church with his...
