Luke 2:52 b observes that among other things, like wisdom (intellectual and emotional growth) and stature (physical and moral growth), Jesus also grew……” in favor with God and in favor with man,” ( that is, spiritually and THEN, lastly, socially in relationship to others.) Our parents are our first models of goodness, provision, safety, and security. Done well, parenting helps a child transfer his trust to God and learn healthy limits to trusting and engaging with other people.
When Jesus articulated the most important commandment in response to the Scribes and Pharisees in (Matthew 22:36-40 and elsewhere) He said….”Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, all your strength…. and the SECOND is like unto it… love others as yourself.
God’s intentional and ordained order for how we develop relationally is observed in Jesus’ own life as He grew in the order Luke detailed… And human cognitive, physical, affective, and social developmental principles and timeframes affirm Scripture’s order. Why would we put any relationship above that with God? Additionally, we must learn to know and love ourselves (by securing our identity in keeping with God’s view of us) in order to love others well.
