Jesus also told them to “go and sin no more..” If they continued sinning he didn’t love them less, but they were not included in the fellowship of followers or given the keys to the kingdom…..two parts to relationship with God…. his unconditional love (without a doubt) and also his requirement for hungering and thirsting for righteousness in order to enjoy his fellowship and the blessings that come from close communion….. We cannot lose his love, but we can forfeit his fellowship.
Many scriptures that people cite cite are about fellowship with God being broken, not love being withdrawn…. And with regard to “hate”, my understanding of the biblical word regarding God’s hate is that it is to be distanced from one. Jesus tells us to hate our family. Does he mean literally? No, he means that our commitment to and love for God must be so wholehearted that it would make even our love for family sseem like hate… It is a call to prioritize love for God, not to abhor and seek ill against our family or others whom we love. I, like God, “hate” sin…. it is not an emotional reaction to sin. It is a desire to separate myself from it as far as possible.
Whether I position myself to abide in Gods love or not does not change the fact of God’s steadfast unchanging love for me and all that he created. If I am not abiding in his love I am out of fellowship, not beyond his love. “In sin” does not equal unloved.
