“Christian Yoga”: Why Are You Here?

A good friend of mine leads a Christian spiritual yoga group on Tuesdays at 5:30.  Today we had a great practice!  She opened with a devotional from Elijah’s troubled time after the defeat of the prophets of Baal when he ran for his life from Jezebel’s threat. After a time he came to a cave. God said, “Why are you here?” And Elijah poured out his complaint to God. God showed his power in a fierce wind, then an earthquake, then a fire, but God did not speak through those things. Even so, God’s power and authority were clearly manifest through them.  Elijah stood at the mouth of the cave and in the silence he heard the still small voice of God whisper again, “Why are you here?” In his heart of hearts, Elijah knew his call.  He had rested and gathered his thoughts. He had sought God.  And God met him through the gentle voice within his soul, and encouraged and directed him to return to what Elijah already knew.  God is in charge.

After our work, My friend asked us, “Why are you here?” As we went through our poses and stretches, I felt within myself an image of my spirit weaving my soul and body back together. I do a fair bit of “soul work” but I struggle with “bodywork”.  In the gentle, quiet soothing environment of a place oddly called “Fierce Body Studio”,  the Holy Spirit works through my spirit and does healing work connecting soul and body. I leave relaxed and feeling whole, integrated, and joyful.  Spirit, soul, and body….. being rejoined by the consoling ministry of God’s Holy Spirit when the forces of the world would pull them asunder.
