There is a difference between perseverance and faithfulness. Perseverance implies the presence of resistance and the need for focus and determination of will that can overcome obstacles and resistance. Perseverance is what I would call an “instrumental value”, the means by which one achieves a goal. It is part of one’s equipping to accomplish what God has purposed.
Faithfulness, on the other hand, is a gift of Spirit-filled living, the outcome that reveals the priority and focus of one’s perseverance of faith and hope. Faithfulness is revealed in perseverance in even small tasks of obedience attuned to God’s will. It is what might be called a “terminal value” or goal in one’s life.
Perseverance is the strength of God in our effort; faithfulness is the grace of God that springs forth from our effort.
Our Titus 2 volunteers often talk about this this aspect of the fruit of the Spirit- FAITHFULNESS.
Faithfulness is a function of devoted priority over time. At one point I had been directed to this summary of five areas of life in which God desires to be first consistently, faithfully.
One writer expounds on the topic of faithfulness this way:
“What does it mean to put God first in your life? Here are five areas where you can put God ‘FIRST?’
Finances. If you want God to bless your finances, even during hard times, start tithing.
Interests. Put him first in your hobbies, your career, and your recreation. Give God first consideration in every decision.
Relationships. Put him first in your family, your marriage, and your friendships.
Schedule. Give him the first part of every day. When you wake up, sit on the side of your bed and say, ‘God, if I don’t get anything else done today, I just want to love you a little bit more and know you a little bit better.’
Troubles. Turn to God first when you have a problem. Prayer should never be your last resort. It should be your first choice.
Put God first in everything. Then watch how much God blesses you.” — Rick Warren
Perseverance will get you to the goal of kingdom living. Faithfulness will reveal that the goal has already been attained.
