More Than A Building…

I arrived early at my church one morning this week. It was quiet; staff members had not yet arrived. I sat on a comfortable sofa in the carpeted entry and just listened. I realized that even "quiet" isn't silent. The renovated building has a life of its own. Locks engage and disengage on a timed schedule. Systems run on power generated elsewhere and emit a low, barely audible vibrating hum that is almost more felt than heard. I had walked around the building earlier in the week and noted the multiple large utility boxes that control its power on the south side of the 60,000+ square foot...

Comprehending Patterns In Reality

"Comprehension involves our ability to find patterns, consistency, and significance in the events and experiences of our lives." Mike Steger To have the ability to comprehend the patterns evidenced in one's life, to observe and embrace the fact that there is consistency in the ways in which we think, make decisions, and behave (and be willing to change the way we think, decide and behave when we can see that our patterns have been unhelpful), and to see the significance of events and experiences of our lives requires that one be well grounded in reality. "Wishful thinking" or "magical...

Mug Love

It's the little things! A friend had given me a gift of a nice thermal coffee cup. ( Thank you, Tommy Tew! ). He had seen my post on how many times I have to microwave a cup of coffee before I finish it. It's solved that problem. Bill was so impressed he decided to get himself one. Now when we have the luxury of a lazy morning we can get through an entire cup without a re-heat! Ha ha! Porch or patio time is uninterrupted. Life is good!  4/27/17

Spirea Van hootii …. Resilience

Just yesterday I had noticed the first white  blossoms of Bridal Wreath around town.  They make me smile. Anytime my Daddy saw them blooming he would say their scientific name.."Spirea Van Hootii"...  According to Mother, it was the only blooming plant he could identify and he liked saying the name. From my post-hurricane notes: "When our backyard fence was destroyed by Hurricane Michael and fallen trees and that further done when the tree debris removal was done, three bridal wreath shrubs were destroyed, too. A few stalks of one bush made a valiant comeback and was transplanted to a...

Community Trees Ravaged

3/24/2019 It's hard to fathom the tree loss within our parks from Hurricane Michael.  This is a before & after of the Garden Club in Panama City. retreepc.com The Project Canopy These stark "before and after" photos that people post on FB still shock and break my heart for all that we've lost.

The Law….. Seen From Both Sides

There was a time ( and perhaps still is) when this firm’s name meant someone was gonna be paying out some serious money for personal injury. Bill and I used an Atty with this firm one time to resolve an auto “ lemon law” issue. Later I was on the other side in a long term custody case advocating for a defendant/mother who was threatened with loss of parental rights. Both cases were resolved in ways that made me happy. I get this firm’s report. It’s interesting to read through the various class action and other cases in which they are involved. Now that we have an attorney granddaughter and a...

Cut The Strings

CBB 3/27/21 Today I was considering how often I have to hunt for scissors and I remembered how my Daddy always carried a knife. He was often using it. To cut a rope for a tarp on a truck, to clean out around the rim of something, to clean his nails after scrubbing his hands, etc. it crossed my mind how convenient it would be to have a knife in my pocket...... I actually do have a folding 6-in-1 tool in my car, but it’s a little cumbersome to carry in a pocket or purse. One never knows when a sharp blade may be needed to cut the strings that have one bound........   by Chad Hymas, Aug...

Crucifying Excuses

Pastor Craig Carter'sessage today at LHUMC- Crucifying Excuses..... When Christ said "Follow me!" , few realized the destination ahead.... but Jesus never hid the truth. Luke 9:22-23 It will require PERSONAL SACRIFICE- are you ready to "rough it"? It's not an easy life and there are no 5 star hotels. Luke 9:57-58 It will require PRESSING URGENCY- Nothing else can come before Jesus' call. First things first. Announce God's kingdom. Our business is life! Luke 9:59-60 It will require PRIORITIZED LIVING- not when everything else is done.... NOW! 1 Kings 19... Elijah invites Elisha. "Plow a...

Pure Hearts

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." When we make every effort to deal honestly, to avoid deceit, to be transparent, to trust (at least until it is proven to be unwarranted), to live in accountable community with others, and to look for the good in the world, we will see begin to see God at work all around us.....his fingerprints will be evident to us in our own lives, in the lives of those we love and in the world at large. And even when others fail us, we will know God's comfort and eventually find our way back to a place of peace and restoration in Christ. When one's...
